K-pop is characterized by a wide variety of audiovisual elements, it is a music genre from in South Korea. Although it includes all genres of “popular music” within South Korea. Kpop (Korean Pop) music originated in South Korea in the early 90’s. Compared to other styles of pop, Kpop is by far the most choreographed in terms of fashion and dancing. Kpop artists always create psychedelic, visually arresting backgrounds in their music videos, which make it exciting to watch. TVXQ and BoA were the first Kpop groups to succeed beyond their home market and expand internationally in the late 90’s. In 2009 the Wonder Girls were the first Kpop group to be on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart with their single Nobody. Three years later Kpop music exploded internationally with PSY’s single and Youtube sensation, Gangnam Style.

Twice is a popular all-girl KPOP group. KPop groups are usually single gender, but they sometimes collaborate. It was the first Youtube video to reach 1 billion and 2 billion views. Kpop has become such a hit with teens worldwide, it has become its own subculture with fashion and merchandise. The top bands/artists today include: BTS, EXO, Big Bang and Got7. Kpop groups excel at social media marketing. In fact, BTS recently beat out all the key U.S. pop stars to garner the Top Social Artists award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2017.
